The Latest:
Today I hosted a virtual press conference calling for an end to offshore drilling in California. It is past time to stop offshore drilling along our precious California coast - the costs of drilling are devastating for our environment, our community and our local economy. Flying over the spill site, I was reminded of both the majesty and the fragility of our oceans. We are stewards of this ocean and we are stewards of this planet - we need to step up and ensure that this does not happen again on our watch. Indigenous, Environmental Justice, Coast and Ocean Protection Organizations are exclaiming the latest ecological disaster off California’s coast should be the last.
Yesterday, I toured Talbert Marsh in Huntington Beach to survey the damage from the Oil Spill. The Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy has done a tremendous job in mobilizing swiftly to stem the flow.
Tuesday, I had a very productive conversation with Governor Newsom and the U.S. Coast Guard on the oil spill response. Clean-up and investigative efforts will continue to be an all-hands-on-deck effort among local, state and federal partners. Governor Newsom answered my call to establish an emergency declaration for the Orange County oil spill to ensure we streamline emergency response efforts and provide our local community with the resources needed to address this disaster. How you can help:
Many of you have reached out asking about how you can help. For your safety and the safety of the animals, the public is asked to not attempt to capture oiled animals. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife has set up a hotline for individuals to call if anyone sees wildlife impacted from the oil. In such instances, you can call (877) 823-6926.
At some point, we will need volunteers to help with beach clean-up efforts, and to help coordinate that effort, the City of Huntington Beach has partnered with the Surfrider Foundation. Anyone interested in helping on that front should sign-up here.
As this crisis continues to unfold, I am committed to providing consistent and reliable information for the community. If you would like to receive updates from my team, please sign up here.
