Important health information on Tustin Hangar Fire

__SALUTATION__

On Tuesday morning, a fire engulfed the historic north hangar at the former Marine Corps Air Station Tustin. The Orange County Fire Authority and surrounding fire departments worked aggressively from the air and ground to control the fire and protect surrounding communities. OCFA remains on site to monitor the situation.

Last night, air quality officials issued a public notice regarding samples of debris and ash collected in public areas near the hangar that show the presence of asbestos. As a result, the South Coast AQMD and Orange County Health Care Agency are urging those in the immediate vicinity of the former air station to follow these safety precautions. There are no alerts or advisories for neighboring cities at this time.

The County of Orange has activated its Emergency Operations Center and created a webpage with helpful updates for the public. You can also receive updates by calling the Public Information Hotline at (714) 628-7085.

Safety Precautions

  • Try to limit your exposure by remaining indoors, with windows and doors closed or seek alternative shelter to reduce exposure to smoke and ash.
  • Avoid touching ash.
  • People with heart or lung disease, including asthma, older adults, children, and pregnant women should use special caution around ash.
  • Children and pets: Children should not be nearby while you clean up ash. Do not allow children to play in ash. Clean ash off all children’s toys before use. Clean ash off pets and other animals.
  • Avoid vigorous activity.
  • Run your air conditioner or air purifier. If possible, do NOT use swamp coolers or whole house fans that bring in outside air.
  • If you are going to be outside, a properly fitted N95 or P100 respirator may provide some protection.
  • Keep your airways (nose and mouth) moist by drinking extra amounts of water.
  • Seek medical attention if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath, or severe fatigue.

We are in close contact with state and local officials to assess next steps to ensure the health and safety of our residents and communities, as well as ensuring the U.S. Navy completes a thorough cleanup of the site in coordination with state and local agencies.
