MLK Day of Service

__SALUTATION__

Happy New Year! As Martin Luther King Day approaches, we are reminded of his commitment to service.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and passion for improving the world around him, I encourage you to search for local volunteer opportunities, such as those at California Volunteers, OneOC, and HomeAid Orange County. Additionally, this year, I am proud to participate in the Community Action Partnership of Orange County’s MLK Day of Service event at the Orange County Food Bank. In partnership with numerous organizations and companies, hundreds of people will come together to assemble and pack food boxes, working side-by-side in unison. The food boxes will be delivered to individuals and families in need throughout the Orange County community. I’ve been a packing partner with my family several times and it’s a fulfilling way to give back.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy reaches far and wide. He inspired thousands across the globe to fight for civil and human rights and a more equitable society. I worked in South Africa in the late 90s and was particularly inspired by the leadership of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu who triumphed against the brutal grip of apartheid. To reflect on the life and memory of both of these inspirational leaders, I wanted to leave you with this quote from Archbishop Desmond Tutu:

When we see others as the enemy, we risk becoming what we hate. When we oppress others, we end up oppressing ourselves. All of our humanity is dependent upon recognizing the humanity in others.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or my team if you have any questions or are in need of assistance with state-related issues.
