Join the City of Tustin for an exciting opportunity for high school juniors and seniors, and college students to explore careers in public service! 

During the event, participants will network with students and elected officials, receive free professional headshots and engage in panel discussions and workshops about careers in public service.

Schedule

8:30 am - 9:30 am Networking Breakfast & Professional Headshots by Studio Three Sixty

Students will receive a digital photo to use for professional networking and employment sites (i.e. LinkedIn)

9:30 am -10:45 am Panel Discussion – Leadership in Local Government 

Welcome – Mayor Austin Lumbard

Introduction – Council Member Ray Schnell 

Opening Remarks - Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris

Moderator - Council Member Beckie Gomez 

Discussion on:

  1. Barriers women face in government, as emergency responders and in leadership roles. 
  2. Career paths and personal development. 
  3. Tips and ways to set yourself apart in the candidate pool.  
  4. Skills hiring managers look for in candidates and examples of their interview successes or blunders.  
  5. Fresh, dynamic, compelling ways to communicate with the public. 
  6. Issues government agencies face when communicating with the public. 

10:45 am -11:00 am Break  

11:00 am -12:30 pm Workshops 

  • Interview Tips (Human Resources Department, City of Tustin)
    • Mock interview panels. 
    • Tips on how to present yourself professionally. 
  • Resume Tips (Human Resources Department, City of Tustin)
    • Tips to stand out amongst your peers. 
  • Public Speaking Tools (JPW Communications)
    • Tips to enhance public speaking skills. 

12:30 pm - 2:00 pm Networking Lunch 

2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Panel Discussion – Women in Politics 

Introduction - Mayor Pro Tem Ryan Gallagher

Opening Remarks – Congresswoman Young Kim 

Moderator – Council Member Letitia Clark 

Discussion on: 

  1. Political career paths. 
  2. Importance of public service.
  3. Importance of women in public service roles.  
  4. Barriers women face in running for and serving in political office.
  5. Tales from the campaign trails.

Requirements

  • Incoming and current college students and incoming high school juniors and seniors.  City of Tustin residents and Tustin Unified School District students will be given priority. Open to all! Tustin residency is not a requirement.
  • Must be able to attend all day.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0.

Class Size: 50 students
