Free household waste, compost giveaway events in Costa Mesa!

Do you have bulky household items you need to throw away? Bring your household waste to Paularino Elementary School on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Please be sure to come early as these events quickly reach capacity.

Caltrans staff will be on-site to collect items that are too bulky for residential garbage bins, such as mattresses, furniture and toys. You can dispose all those items at no charge.

The following items will NOT be accepted at this event:

  • Hazardous materials (batteries, paints, oils, chemicals, pesticides, smoke detectors, fluorescent lights, etc.)
  • Concrete, dirt, rocks, brick, asphalt, or sand
  • Treated wood
  • Tires

Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD), in partnership with waste hauler CR&R Environmental Services, is hosting a free drive-thru compost giveaway event for CMSD customers at Estancia High School on Saturday, May 20 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Event Details:

  • Eligibility: attendees must show proof of residence in Costa Mesa to avail of free compost. This can include a driver's license, ID, or utility bills.
  • Eligible residents can take home:
    • Two (2) bags of compost per household, while supplies last; and
    • One (1) countertop kitchen pail per household, while supplies last.
  • Attendees must remain in their vehicles throughout the drive-thru and follow traffic control signs and signals.
  • The event will end promptly at 12 PM and no entries will be permitted after that time.
