From Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris

__SALUTATION__

Happy New Year! As Martin Luther King Day approaches we are reminded of his commitment to service. In honor of Martin Luther King's legacy and passion for improving the world around him, I encourage you to Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off.

This year, it is especially important to get involved in our community as the Covid-19 Pandemic has led to wide scale disruption and economic hardship for millions of families across the country.

Join me on Monday, January 17, 2022 as we come together to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. through meaningful service. The Orange County Food Bank will be hosting an exciting event where volunteer "packing partners" will assemble and pack food boxes, working side-by-side (while socially distanced) as a sign of unity and equality. The food boxes will then be delivered to seniors in need throughout the Orange County community. I've been a packing partner with my family several times and it's a fulfilling way to give back.

If you would like to sign up for a volunteer shift at the Orange County Food Bank Martin Luther King Day of Service, please reply to this email. All volunteers will need to wear a mask during their shift. Gloves are optional and hand sanitizer will be available.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy reaches far and wide. He inspired thousands across the globe to fight for civil and human rights and a more equitable society. I worked in South Africa in the late 90s and was particularly inspired by the leadership of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu who triumphed against the brutal grip of aparthied. To reflect on the life and memory of both of these inspirational leaders, I wanted to leave you with this quote from Archbishop Desmond Tutu:

"When we see others as the enemy, we risk becoming what we hate. When we oppress others, we end up oppressing ourselves. All of our humanity is dependent upon recognizing the humanity in others."

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or my team if you have any questions or are in need of assistance with state-related issues.

Yours faithfully,
