California State Assembly Select Committee on Student Debt Informational Hearing
When I found out that Californians owe $133 billion in student loan debt, I immediately started seeing what we could do to stem this crisis. The Speaker of the Assembly appointed me Chair of the Select Committee on Student Debt and I am hosting a hearing at UC Irvine next Friday. I look forward to collaborating with my fellow committee members, our colleagues in the Legislature and advocates to make sure student borrowers have a shot at the future they deserve. I'm hosting this event along with NextGen Policy, Consumer Law Clinic at UCI and the Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine (ASUCI), and I hope you'll join us.
In California alone, there exists $134.3 billion in total outstanding debt, with an average student debt balance of $35,517. The severity of the student debt crisis demands attention and this hearing aims to find real solutions for the 44 million borrowers struggling with debt. A panel of experts and individual borrowers will share their experiences with barriers created by rising student debt levels in an effort to identify opportunities for policy solutions. If you'd like to share your story or thoughts on solutions there will be an opportunity for public comment.
