Welcome to "Catching Up With Cottie" - a weekly update about what I am working on as your representative in the California State Assembly.
Last Call for Applications! Join my inaugural Young Legislators Program, which offers up to 15 qualified high school juniors or seniors in the 73rd Assembly District a front row seat to the public policy arena. During the six month program, students will learn to become better advocates on issues they care about, gain valuable leadership skills and consider future careers in the public and private sector, all free of cost. Applications are due by December 13. To learn more about the program and to apply, click here.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve, and I am committed to addressing the issues that are important to you. As always, if there is anything that my team or I can do to assist you with a local or state issue, if you have questions or concerns about what I am working on, or anything in between, please contact my office. My team and I are here to help!
Yours faithfully,
Cottie Petrie-Norris
California State Assemblywoman
It was a privilege to honor Vice Mayor Jeff Harlan and Council Member Don Harper for their dedicated service to the City of Costa Mesa. I also had the pleasure of congratulating Mayor John Stephens and Councilmembers Loren Gameros on their reelections, as well as welcoming the newly elected Councilmembers Mike Buley, and Jeff Pettis.
Team Cottie was thrilled to recognize outgoing Councilmembers Becky Gomez and Letitia Clark for their remarkable service and dedication to our community. Your leadership has made a lasting impact on the City of Tustin. Thank you for everything you've done—your legacy will continue to inspire many.
Last week I joined Kaiser Permanente Health Policy Educational Symposium where I gave an overview of California politics and shared updates on my priorities in Sacramento as we gear up for a new legislative session. Grateful for the opportunity to connect and collaborate on key issues shaping our state's future!
I love getting to know our local businesses. Last week, I visited Solventum; an innovative healthcare company that develops, manufactures, and delivers cutting-edge products and medical devices. Based right here in Irvine, their impressive facility employs over 400 talented professionals!

Over the weekend, my office teamed up with SoCo Smog, a woman-owned and operated car garage in Costa Mesa, to host an empowering auto basics workshop! Young women and girls gained hands-on car maintenance skills, learning everything from checking fluids and filters to using jumper cables, thanks to Angie, SoCo Smog's incredible owner. A big thank you to Girls Inc. for partnering with us to make this inspiring event possible!
COMMUNITY RECOGNITION
Team Cottie was thrilled to honor Principal Belinda Averill of South Lake Middle School, who has been recognized as one of only nine recipients nationwide of the 2024 Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership. Averill is one of just two educators in California to receive this prestigious award, which celebrates principals who have made a profound impact on their schools and communities.
Team Cottie was excited to visit Gremlin Garage and recognize this incredible women-owned coffee shop in Costa Mesa! We're proud to support local businesses that make our community stronger. Next time you're in the area, make sure to stop by and shop local!
Team Cottie also joined the Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce for the ribbon cutting celebrating ATEL's newest location in Irvine, and their 20th anniversary celebration! Wishing you many more years of success.
RESOURCES
Join the City of Tustin on the go! Use the free app, Engage Tustin, to stay in the loop with City updates and to report any concerns.
California's unclaimed property laws require "holders," such as corporations, business associations, financial institutions, insurance companies, and others, to annually deliver and report to the State Controller's Office after there has been no customer contact for over three years. Often the owner forgets that the account exists, moves and does not leave a forwarding address, or the forwarding address expires. To find potential money, visit the State Controller's Office and search the Database of Unclaimed Properties for money that the state may owe you.
