Welcome to "Catching Up With Cottie" - a weekly update about what I am working on as your representative in the California State Assembly.

It was an honor to return to the United Kingdom this year as part of the California State Assembly Delegation. During our visit, we had the opportunity to engage with UK leaders on some of today's most pressing topics — from artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to insurance, banking, and the evolving US-UK relationship.
Importantly, taxpayer dollars were NOT used to fund this trip.
I'm excited to share a few highlights from this meaningful exchange in this week's newsletter.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve, and I am committed to addressing the issues that are important to you. As always, if there is anything that my team or I can do to assist you with a local or state issue, if you have questions or concerns about what I am working on, or anything in between, please contact my office. My team and I are here to help!
Yours faithfully,

Cottie Petrie-Norris
California State Assemblywoman

We had a thoughtful and engaging exchange with our partners at the UK Home Office on the future of AI and emerging technologies. Our conversation touched on the transformative applications of AI in the near future, opportunities for public-private collaboration, and strategies for building public trust. We also shared the work we're doing in the California State Assembly to promote responsible AI innovation while assessing risks and advancing effective safeguards.

On our second day, we met with policy experts from the Bank of England and Lloyd's of London to discuss the use of parametric insurance in wildfire-prone areas and the broader sustainability of California's reinsurance market. We shared insights on California's Sustainable Insurance Strategy, which aims to address urgent challenges in the insurance sector while laying the groundwork for long-term stability.

Our final day centered on the strength of the US-UK relationship. We met with the Deputy Head of the US-Canada Department at the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to discuss ways to deepen bilateral cooperation and highlight California's role in strengthening international partnerships. We wrapped up the day with memorable tours of the Foreign Office and Downing Street—a great way to conclude a meaningful and productive visit.

My team attended a briefing hosted by Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) to learn more about their impactful Wellness on Wheels (WoW) program. This innovative mobile health initiative delivers asthma treatment, preventive care, and vital social services directly to underserved communities across Orange County. Grateful to CHOC staff ensuring that they offer language services and be culturally responsive so that families throughout our region receive the care and support they deserve—right in their own neighborhoods.

Team Cottie rolled up their sleeves and joined local families at Share Ourselves to help prepare thousands of backpacks filled with school supplies for students in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Thanks to SOS and its incredible volunteers, up to 3,000 backpacks will be distributed this school year—ensuring children have the tools they need for a successful start!

It was great to once again join the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Back to School Expo, held in partnership with amazing community organizations. Team Cottie was proud to support local families as they gear up for a strong start to the school year! The event provided students with essential resources, from backpacks and school supplies to new shoes.
